Patriotism

As news of the shooting in Ottawa flowed over the news channels and internet on Wednesday, the shock then the sadness overcame our nation.  And then the patriotism.  Canada is not normally a flag-waving nation like our neighbours to the south.  But when something matters, we get those flags out.

Thousands of Canadians lined the highway and overpasses as Cpl Nathan Cirillo's body was transported along the Highway of Heroes from Ottawa to Hamilton on Friday.  It was a sea of red and white as Canadian flags were waving in the breeze as the hearse slowly made its way past the crowds gathered to pay their respects.
Young and old showed their support.
It was an amazing site to see and makes my proud to be Canadian.

Lending a Helping Hand

Do you ever have the feeling that people come to you with their problems?  Friends, family?
Well everyone comes to me- for everything.  It is not that I really mind but.....
Marissa is often texting me for passwords or asking me to mail something to her or can I check something out for her (like looking in her closet for a certain black dress and not knowing which one -of the five or six- so taking a photo of all of them and emailing them to her so she could pick, all the while she had the certain black dress at University with her!!).
My sister comes over to use my computer and usually needs my help to find something, order something or print something.
My Guy needs help (or says he does) for a lot of things just because he knows I will do it---- then he won't have to.
My brother called me this morning.  He is going through a bad time and he called me because I am easy to talk to.  I guess I am (I talk to myself all the time!!)
I don't mind helping anyone!  I know one thing about me is that I am a nice person.  But sometimes, I just wish someone would help me.
Ya feel me?

September

September always seems the time of new beginnings to me.  That is originally because of school starting in September.  Now it is because new things happen in September.   I started volunteering with the Sea Cadet Corps that Marissa used to belong to.  I will probably only do it for one year but it should be good. The kids are great.  I also became a Girl Guide leader so I am volunteering with a Pathfinder unit-- mostly doing the crafts, which is never a bad thing.
Fall is my favourite season - with the crisp air, and brilliant colours.  I love turkey and Thanksgiving, and Halloween is one of my favourite holidays.  I have already started decorating the house.  I made lots of Halloween cards to give out.  (And I already started making my Christmas cards!!  It is never too early!!)  I may even carve a pumpkin this year- just for myself!
I have been doing lots of crafts lately- I belong to a few card swaps and a couple craft swaps.  Those are always fun for creativity.  And I am slowly making an art collage for the living room wall.
I am still riding my bike most places.  I will try to ride as far into the cold weather as I can- I hate taking the bus!!
Happy Autumn Everyone!

The End of Summer!

Marissa and I took a trip on the 21st.  My nephew got married.  It was a short trip but it was fun.  The wedding was nice and it was great to spend time with Marissa after her being away most of the summer.  The wedding was near Calgary so we got to drive to Banff for the day as well, which is great because I had never been there!

And now Marissa is gone again.  Back to University!  I just spent ALL day on Saturday driving her, taking her out for breakfast, helping her get settled into her Residence, taking her shopping, taking her out for supper and then spending the 7 hours driving home again!  Man, was I tired!!!!!!!!
So now I have quiet in the house again!  I am really proud of my girl!  She is doing so great!!

A fun Saturday

On Saturday, My Guy and I went on a long bike ride to the old town where we used to live!  Lakeshore Rd is now officially called The Pelvis Crusher. We rode past My Guy's old house. We rode past both houses I used to live in as a kid; we rode down Queen St., stopped for a really nice dinner.
We went down to the Lake and sat under a tree planted in memory of the brother of friends of mine.
It was a nice day-- then we had to ride back home. Total 35 km. And Marissa got a tattoo on a Saturday!

Taking A Look Around- The View from my Bike

I don't have a car.  I haven't had one since November. As anyone who has been reading my blog for a while (all 4 of you!! Thanks, by the way) knows that I ride my bike everywhere.

It is 5.5 km to work and 5.5 km back home so I end up doing 11 km a day at minimum.  If I have any kind of errands, that usually adds anywhere from 2 to 16 more km to my bike riding.

The beginning of the biking season -which was late this year due to the cold and icy weather -is usually a struggle for me as it takes a few weeks to condition myself every Spring.  But once I am used to it, the riding is no problem.  I can get to anywhere in the city -faster than the bus- with no problem.

I have lost more than 20 pounds this summer- which is always a good thing.  Not having a car has saved a HUGE amount of money on gas and car maintenance.   Admittedly, I have had to rent a car a few times when I needed to get somewhere farther my legs can take me.  But all in all, it has been a really great experience.

Another benefit of bike riding- especially in the summer, is the scenery.  Really, when riding in a car, especially driving, a person misses a lot.
On my bike, I get a real look around.  I have ridden past shopping plazas and really looked at the stores that are in there.  Riding my bike past houses lets me have a good look at the various gardens and flowers.  It gives me ideas. On my way to work, I see lots of rabbits, a few opossums.  I can do without the skunks though.
On my way home from work, there are always people out walking or running- getting in their morning exercise.  It is nice to be able to say a 'good morning.'  The dog-walkers are out at any time of day.

It is not all rosey.
I did have three flat tires in one week.  Two in one day- my back tire.  I must have ridden over glass. (There is a lot of broken glass on the roads.) Then my front tire- which was the first flat for my front since I have had my bike- more than 10 years.   I got new tubes and two new road tires- so hopefully I am set for a while.

I have a small backpack that I use as a purse- it carries enough.  I can do a bit of shopping and still get my purchases home!
And it is really nice to be able to go around traffic jams!!

Truthfully, it will probably be at least another year or two before I think of buying a car.

A New Family Member

We got a new dog.  We adopted from B.A.R.K who was up at our local humane society from Louisiana with dogs for adoption!  We named her Coco.

Below is Spirit.  We have had her for 3 years.

This is Phantom.  He is a little cuddlebug!
Three dogs is the limit in our city so that is it!
